David was diagnosed with DIPG at the age of 6 in April 2018. He completed five courses of radiation, participated in a trial and took several different types of chemotherapy. David Jr died at the age of 9 in May 2021. He enjoyed Power Rangers, Pokémon, Lego, traveling, riding roller coasters, building sand castles and looking for shells. His catch phrase as he called it was "Make Every Day The Best Day Ever" and lived by it. David Jr became an advocate for children facing cancer and even met with Federal and State officials to spread awareness and increase funding.

In 2008, in support of The Cure Starts Now, Graeter’s ice cream auctioned off a once in a lifetime chance to create your own flavor. The winners of the auction worked with Graeter's to help develop a flavor to honor Elena Desserich, the inspiration for The Cure Starts Now. Now a Limited Edition seasonal flavor, Elena's Blueberry Pie honors the memories of all young lives affected by pediatric cancer and supports The Cure Starts Now's mission to find the Homerun Cure for all cancers.
